Abstract - Landslides frequently occur on cut slopes along the road system during rainy season in Vietnam. An understanding of the contributing factors and triggering mechanisms is essential so that proper measures can be taken to stabilize slopes and reduce impacts caused by landslides. This study aims to investigate characteristics, causes, and mechannisms of landslides, and their countermeasures along the Halong-Vandon Expressway by using detailed site investigation and analyzing collected data of geology, geomorphology, rainfall and project documents. The results show that landslides occurred at 44 locations from June to August in 2017 and 2018 in rainy seasons. In the total number of landslides, shallow landslides were dominanted on cut slopes along the highway, accounting for 39 cases. Rainfall with moderate to high intensity in a short time period was the main landslide triggering factor. Slope cutting was the sub-main cause of the landslides while geological factors, such as weathered rocks and fractured formations, were the significant preparatory factors to sliding. In addition to geological causes, the analysis also presented that the improper investigation and design regarding the calculation for safety factors in road construction played as a important contributing factor that was a critical issue in Vietnam.
